Remote Sensing for Northern Project Development: Realize How Your Project Can Benefit
from om Utilizing Remote Sensing technology
Monday, March 12 • 9:00 am to 12:30 pm (Registration opens at 8:30) |

Northern resource development offers many potential economic benefi ts to Northerners. However development must be done with an understanding of the unique social and natural character of the North. It must also take into account the realities of working in challenging, remote environments. Understanding the environment before a project is executed provides a baseline against which project impacts can be measured. Real-time information on the environment during project operations can support safer, more cost-effective and environmentally responsible operations. Monitoring the environment before and after a project can quantify the success of a reclamation strategy to return the land to an acceptable condition.Advances in remote sensing technologies, especially Earth observation (EO) satellites, have provided a signifi cant increase in information gathering capabilities in recent years. Satellites are ideally suited for monitoring remote regions, independent of ground infrastructure such as power, communications and environmental enclosures. Radar satellites add the benefi ts of night/day, fog/cloud penetration. Recently launched satellites have much higher revisit capabilities and increased resolution for fi ner detail, providing better classifi cation capabilities. Advanced processing techniques have made it possible to understand even subtle changes such as ground deformation, where accuracies of less than a centimetre are now possible. This session will provide insight into:
- Advances in remote sensing technologies, especially Earth observation (EO) satellites and what the numerous capabilities are
- Useful applications for the oil & gas sector
- Use of remote sensing for programs that support natural resource development
LOOKNorth is a designated Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research focused on sustainable development of the North by promoting the use of remote sensing technologies.

This workshop is meant as a 101 on shale. It will provide insight into: What is shale? Why all the hype? Where do the concerns around shale practices stem from? This interactive session will examine:
- Exploring the difference between an early exploration program and a development program in shales
- What is shale and how is it different from conventional oil and gas production?
- What has changed to make shale production viable?
- Understanding some of the challenges in shale development and how these are being overcome
- Outlining key shale production techniques: horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracture stimulation, pad drilling, multilateral drilling
- Water usage and recycling
- How is shale regulated on federal lands?
